Allegiant Movie Set Design
There are many scenes on the red planet in the movie Allegiant. Movie set design needs a lot of creativity and Chromatech was invited to participate. The movie set design company needed colors that fit their color palate:

The objectives were to change the color and texture of the ground and to change the color of the plants.
Movie Set Design with Pigment Dispersions
Chromatech’s pigment dispersions were used in two ways:
- Pigment dispersions were added to hydromulch and then sprayed on the ground in layers, adding color and texture.
- Pigment dispersions were added to our colorless turf extender to make custom colored turf paint. This turf paint was then used to paint plants, moss, and vertical surfaces.
Since the movie set design company wanted the flexibility of being able to change the color at will, they used mainly red pigment dispersion and then shaded it with blue, yellow, and green pigment dispersions. Below are some pictures taken during the movie set construction.
Movie Set Construction
Since water-based pigment dispersions are not meant to be released directly into waterways, Allegiant’s special effects team changed the color of the rivers and streams with computers. The embankments, however, were covered in red-shaded hydromulch.

This is what moss painted with custom colored turf paint looks like:

Notice the plants and rocks in this photo that were painted with custom turf paint.

Layering the red hydromulch gave texture to the movie set. This had to be repeated between takes because it was trampled during shooting.

Colored water was contained so that it did not flow into waterways.
